Theory of Behaviorism by Staats and Watson
Theory of Behaviorism by Staats and Watson
Journal 2
Hello everyone, welcome back! This is my second
journal. I have read some articles about John B. Watson experiment about theory
of behaviorism. Watson has basic assumption that All behavior is learned from
the environment. He believed that psychology should be seen as a science, so it
needs to be supported by empirical data. Watson
also described the purpose of psychology as: 'To predict, given the stimulus,
what reaction will take place; or, given the reaction, state what the situation
or stimulus is that has caused the reaction.
Watson used little Albert as the object of experiment.
His experiment using classical conditioning to program Albert to be afraid of
rat. Firstly, he placed Albert in a room with a white rat. At first Albert
showed no fear. Then Watson’s assistance struck a steel bar with hammer every
time Albert reached out to the rat and make him cry. It makes Albert get away
from the rat. It shows that he had been conditioned to fear the rat. From his
experiment is the proof of Watson’s basic assumption that environment can
changes someone behavior.
I also read some articles about Arthur W. Staats. Arthur
W. Staats psychological behaviorism extends behaviorism to the field of
psychology. Consequently, it postulates that we can explain psychology through
observable behaviors. The components of psychology include personality,
learning, and emotions.
Staats was propose that personality consists of a
repertoire of learned behaviors. These behaviors stem from the interactions
between the environment, biology, cognition, and emotions. According to Staats, sensory-motor, cognitive-linguistic,
and emotional-motivational repertoire
are three behavioral repertoires that make up a personality theory. From
some articles I know relation about psychology behavior with education,
psychology behavior with language, and psychology behavior with behavior
disorders.
In my opinion, I disagree with Watson’s opinion that
he could shape anyone into anything. Because everyone has their own way, and we
do not need to shape them as our wish. If we use this experiment to kids, they
might be not confident with themselves or lost identity. But I agree that environment plays an important role to
someone's behavior.
In the other hand, I agree with Staats that psychological behaviorism holds that a person’s psychology can be explained through observable behavior. As a parents or anyone we are, psychology behavior is important to learn, so we can give advice that makes students or someone be better person.
